Gas price rises creating ‘national crisis’ in UK, energy companies warn

«Stratospheric» wholesale gas and power prices threaten a «national crisis» in Britain, energy companies are warning, as they increase the pressure on UK ministers to protect customers and suppliers from volatility in commodity markets.

Gas has also surged in Europe, with prices up more than 70 per cent over the past two weeks because of cold weather, nuclear outages in France and lower flows from Russian supplier Gazprom.
